Welcome to the Aberdeenshire Council Historic Environment Record (HER). This website gives you online access to information about historic and archaeological sites across Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen City, Angus and Moray. The record is looked after by the Aberdeenshire Council Archaeology Service.
The HER includes details of more than 65,000 places of archaeological and historical interest. These range from the earliest prehistoric remains to Cold War sites and more recent buildings. You’ll find information on archaeological sites and finds, historic buildings, and historic landscapes, including places that are nationally protected as well as those that are not.
The information in the HER comes from many different sources. These include archaeological surveys and excavations, historic maps, aerial photographs, academic research, and reports from members of the public. The record is regularly updated as new discoveries are made and new information becomes available.
You can search the HER to learn about well known sites that people visit today, as well as less visible features in the landscape, such as cropmarks that can only be seen from the air. You can use a simple search, browse by location, or explore sites from different historical periods using the advanced search options.
Please note that this website does not show the full Historic Environment Record. If a site does not appear here, it does not mean that no archaeological remains exist. Some records may also be incomplete or updated in the future. For these reasons, the online HER should not be used on its own for planning applications, land management, legal decisions, or commercial work. If needed, professional advice should be sought.
